Coexistence: WhatsApp Business App and API on the Same Number
Coexistence (Meta calls it onboarding WhatsApp Business app users) lets one number run on the WhatsApp Business app and the Cloud API at the same time: what you need (Business app version 2.24.17 or higher, onboarding through a WhatsApp provider's Embedded Signup), what syncs (WhatsApp contacts, up to 180 days / 6 months of 1:1 chat history if you agree to share it, media only from the last 14 days, no group chats), which app features switch off (broadcast lists, disappearing, view-once and live location messages), the fixed 20 messages-per-second throughput, how billing works (app messages stay free, API messages are charged at Cloud API rates), linked devices, and how to disconnect.
On this page
Yes. Meta lets you keep using the WhatsApp Business app on your phone and connect the same number to the Cloud API. Meta's docs call this "onboarding WhatsApp Business app users"; support teams and partners call it Coexistence. You keep chatting one-to-one from the app, your WhatsApp provider (BSP) uses the API to send high volumes, and WhatsApp keeps the message history of both in sync.
You don't need to delete your WhatsApp account or change your number. You connect it through your provider's sign-up flow (Meta's Embedded Signup), and you can choose whether to share your existing chat history.
What you need#
- The WhatsApp Business app, version 2.24.17 or higher. (The regular WhatsApp Messenger app does not qualify; see Move Your Existing WhatsApp Number to the API.)
- A WhatsApp provider (BSP) that has turned on Business app number onboarding in its Embedded Signup flow. Meta lists the provider requirements (Solution Partner or Tech Provider status, working webhooks, Embedded Signup with session logging); they are the provider's job, not yours.
- Your phone with the WhatsApp Business app open during setup, so the sync can run.
How connecting works#
Choose to connect your existing account
In your provider's Embedded Signup flow, pick the option to connect your existing WhatsApp Business app account, and enter its phone number. WhatsApp shows you a verification code; copy it.
Open the message in the Business app
You receive a message from the official Facebook Business account in the app. Tap Connect, then Connect to the Business Platform.
Decide about chat history
Tap Confirm in the app. This step gives you the option to share your chat history with the provider.
Paste the code and finish
Paste the verification code and complete the rest of the sign-up flow. When onboarding is done, the Business app refreshes and shows that the number is connected to the API.
Keep the app open while it syncs
The provider now pulls your contacts and (if you agreed) your history. This can take several minutes, depending on how much history you have and your internet speed.
What gets synced#
| Data | What carries over to the API side |
|---|---|
| Contacts | All contacts with a WhatsApp number. Later additions and changes keep syncing. |
| 1:1 chat history | Messages sent and received in the last 180 days (about 6 months) before onboarding, only if you agreed to share history. |
| Media in old chats | Media files are included only for messages sent within 14 days of onboarding. Older media messages arrive without the file. |
| Group chats | Not synced. |
| New messages | Everything sent and received after onboarding is mirrored between the app and the API, including messages you send from the Business app. |
What changes in the Business app#
Some app features are switched off once the number is connected to the API. Others stay in the app but are not available through the API.
| Business app feature | What happens in the app | Available through the API? |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 chats | Keep working. Message edit and revoke become supported. | Yes, mirrored both ways |
| Contacts | No change | Yes, synced |
| Group chats | No change | No |
| Disappearing messages | Turned off for all 1:1 chats | No |
| View once messages | Disabled for all 1:1 chats | No |
| Live location messages | Disabled for all 1:1 chats | No |
| Broadcast lists | Disabled. No new lists; existing lists become read-only | No |
| Voice and video calls | No change | No |
| Business tools (catalog, orders, status) | No change | No |
| Messaging tools (greeting and away messages, quick replies, labels, marketing messages) | No change | No |
| Business profile (name, address, website) | No change | No |
| Channels | No change | No |
Linked devices#
You can link up to four companion devices ("linked devices") to the Business app. When you connect to the API, all companion devices are unlinked; you can link them again afterwards. Every companion is supported except WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS. Messages viewed on an unsupported companion show placeholder text asking the person to check their main phone.
Billing and the 24-hour window#
| Sent from | Cost | 24-hour customer service window |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp Business app | Free, as before | Doesn't apply. App messages don't open, extend or affect API windows. |
| Cloud API | Charged at normal Cloud API pricing | Applies as normal. See The 24-Hour Customer Service Window. |
A window only opens when a customer messages you after you are connected. If a customer wrote to you just before onboarding, the API side can only answer them with a template.
Limits#
- Throughput is fixed at 20 messages per second for a number used on both the Business app and the API.
- The provider can't deregister a Coexistence number through the API. Disconnecting is done from the app (below).
- If you previously worked with another provider and still share its credit line, you may see an error when switching to a new provider. Meta has a support guide for resolving it.
Disconnecting#
In the WhatsApp Business app, go to Settings → Account → Business Platform and tap Disconnect Account. Your provider is notified.
The connection can also drop on its own. Meta's reasons include:
| Reason | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Primary device inactive | The phone with the Business app was inactive for about 14 days |
| Companion inactive | A companion device was inactive for about 30 days |
| Re-registered | The account was registered again on a new device |
| Number changed | The business changed its phone number |
| Moved to consumer WhatsApp | The number was registered in the regular WhatsApp Messenger app |
| Account disconnected | Enforcement, or the WhatsApp account was deleted |
Technical details#
For developers integrating this on the provider side:
- Turn it on in Embedded Signup by adding
"featureType": "whatsapp_business_app_onboarding"to theextrasobject of the launch call (on Embedded Signup v5 it is on by default). - Webhook fields to subscribe to, in addition to the usual ones:
account_update,history,smb_app_state_sync(contacts) andsmb_message_echoes(messages the business sends from the app or a companion). - Finish event: the session event is
FINISH_WHATSAPP_BUSINESS_APP_ONBOARDING. Itswaba_idis the business's existing account ID (Meta converts the account into a Messaging account that keeps the same ID). Skip the phone number registration step: the number is already registered. - Sync by calling
POST /<BUSINESS_PHONE_NUMBER_ID>/smb_app_dataonce for contacts and once for history. If the business declined to share history, ahistorywebhook with error code2593109arrives instead. History webhooks come in phases (day 0–1, 1–90, 90–180) and chunks;progressreaching100means the sync is complete. - Check status:
curl 'https://graph.facebook.com/v26.0/<BUSINESS_PHONE_NUMBER_ID>?fields=is_on_biz_app,platform_type' \
-H 'Authorization: Bearer <ACCESS_TOKEN>'{ "is_on_biz_app": true, "platform_type": "CLOUD_API", "id": "106540352242922" }is_on_biz_app: true with platform_type: CLOUD_API means the number works on both.
- Disconnects trigger an
account_updatewebhook with aPARTNER_REMOVEDevent, which may include adisconnection_infoobject (reason,initiated_by). - Error
131060(unsupported message webhook) is expected: it happens when someone messages the business for the first time (often from a click-to-WhatsApp ad; it usually clears within seconds) or uses an unsupported companion device. Tell the business to check the message in the Business app.
Frequently asked#
Can I keep using the WhatsApp Business app after connecting the API?
Yes. With Coexistence, the same number works in the WhatsApp Business app and on the Cloud API at the same time. You keep one-to-one chats in the app, and messages are mirrored between the two. You need Business app version 2.24.17 or higher and a provider that supports it.
Will I lose my WhatsApp chats if I connect to the API?
No. Your chats stay in the Business app. If you agree to share history during setup, the provider can also import your 1:1 chats from the last 180 days (about 6 months). Media is included only for messages from the last 14 days, and group chats are not imported.
Why did my broadcast lists stop working?
Connecting the number to the API disables broadcast lists in the Business app. You can't create new ones, and existing lists become read-only. Disappearing messages, view once and live location messages are also turned off for 1:1 chats.
Do I pay for messages I send from the WhatsApp Business app?
No. Messages sent from the Business app stay free. Only messages sent through the Cloud API are charged, at normal Cloud API rates. App messages also don't open or extend the API's 24-hour customer service window.
Can I use Coexistence with the normal WhatsApp app?
No. It works only with the WhatsApp Business app. A number on the regular WhatsApp Messenger app must have its WhatsApp account deleted before it can be registered on the API.
Why were my linked devices logged out after connecting?
Connecting unlinks all companion devices. Link them again afterwards. WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS are not supported while the number is connected to the API.
Does the API still work if I don't open the app?
Keep the Business app active. Meta can disconnect the number if the main phone is inactive for about 14 days, or a companion device for about 30 days.
How do I disconnect the API from my WhatsApp Business app?
In the WhatsApp Business app, go to Settings → Account → Business Platform and tap Disconnect Account. The provider can't do this for you through the API.
Is sending slower with Coexistence?
A number on both the app and the API has a fixed throughput of 20 messages per second.
